Will the Real Young Voters Please Stand Up?

A Zócalo Public Square presentation co-presented by LAist 89.3, Los Angeles Local News Initiative, Boyle Heights Beat, and CalMatters, with generous funding from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation.

Young millennial and Generation Z voters might be a powerful force in the 2024 presidential election, with Gen Z alone accounting for more than 40 million prospective voters. It’s no surprise that both main political parties are striving to organize this demographic, half of whom do not identify as Democrats or Republicans. However, young voters have historically low turnout, and their trust in institutions, authorities, and the media is dwindling. Can viral trends and humorous TikToks encourage young people to vote? How do these voters sift through a constant flood of information and stop to contemplate what is important to them? What do people truly want to hear from the candidates?

A panel of civically engaged Gen Zers and young millennials from various political parties visits Zócalo to stand up and speak for themselves: progressive political digital media specialist Annie Wu Henry, youth civic engagement advocate Ava Mateo, and former Iowa State Representative Joe Mitchell.

Don’t miss Cal State LA’s Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs’ voter involvement activities before and after the conversation.
